Jewel shines on debut of HDTV

Jewel, Salma Hayek and David Arquette better look their best April 26.
That's the night they'll help Jay Leno and NBC usher in a new era of
high-definition TV as "The Tonight Show" becomes the first regularly
scheduled network show to be filmed in the new sharp technology.
The show will be on hiatus next week as Jay's studio gets outfitted with
seven new HDTV cameras and a new "high-def" control room.
The stars better take extra care with their wardrobes and makeup because
the high-definition technology will put every one of their features into
much sharper focus. Enhancements need to be made to Jay's set too, says
Gary Considine, executive producer at NBC's Burbank studios.
"We're like the guinea pigs," he said. "We're experimenting
with the
makeup, the lighting, the camera angles and the backdrop."
Although very few people actually own expensive high-definition TV sets,
those of us with ordinary sets will see a difference, Considine insists.
The goal, he said, "is the prettiest picture you've ever seen on
television."
